Do You Need a Permit to Replace Windows in Alabama?

2 min read

There are a lot of things that go into home improvement projects: planning, budgeting, and sometimes, permits.

It’s no secret that large projects like building a deck or adding an extra room require a building permit. But what about replacing your windows? Does that require a building permit? Most of the time, no. But there is one instance in which you do need a permit. Let’s get into it!

When You Need – and Don’t Need – a Permit to Replace Windows

If you’re looking to update your windows by having replacement windows installed, you do not need to secure a permit. Since we’re simply removing one window and replacing it with another, a building permit is not required.

However, if you would like to add a window where there currently isn’t one, you will need a building permit. That’s because installing a window in an existing wall is a more involved process than replacing one window with another.

Imagine your bathroom doesn’t have windows but you’d like to add a sliding window to invite some natural light and ventilation. To do this, a contractor will need to cut a hole in the wall for the window before we can install it. This is making a fundamental change to your home, which is why a permit is required. Furthermore, creating this opening may involve working around plumbing or electrical elements, which is another reason a permit is necessary.

In fact, anything that involves your plumbing and/or electrical systems will require a permit. It’s not often that window installation and plumbing or electrical interfere with each other, but it’s not unheard of. Keep in mind that this only applies if you are planning on installing a window where there currently isn’t one! If you’re simply replacing your windows, this will not be a concern.

How to Get a Building Permit for Windows

To apply for a building permit, you’ll go to your local municipality’s building and permits division.

In Muscle Shoals, that’s the Building, License & Zoning department.

Simply search “building permit” + your city to find the right department. Some municipalities may allow you to apply online, but most will probably require a paper application.
