4 Home Improvements to Boost Your Mental Health

2 min read

When we think about improving our mental health, things like getting exercise, reducing stress, and taking time to relax regularly. But did you know that some home improvement projects may be good for your mental health? It’s true! Improving your living space and making it more comfortable for you and your family is a great way to boost your mood.

Here are four improvements you can make to your home to improve your mental health:

1. Increase Natural Light

Studies have shown that there are a lot of health benefits to natural light: better sleep, lowered risk of depression, and less severe seasonal affective disorder. By increasing your natural light, you may reap these benefits. In addition, more natural light can make your space feel more open and connected to nature, which can also help reduce stress.

Increasing natural light is as simple as opening up the curtains and blinds and letting the sun shine in! If your home’s windows are smaller than you’d like, consider having larger windows installed. Bay windows, sliding windows, and double hung windows are all great options that maximize sunlight.

2. Get Organized

When things are cluttered or disorganized, it can increase feelings of stress and anxiety. The simple act of decluttering and getting rid of what you no longer need and organizing what you keep is a great way to reduce those negative feelings.

Start organizing one room, or even one area at a time. Take everything out (this will probably get messy!) and sort into three piles: keep, donate, and trash. For the items that you’re going to keep, organize them in a way that is most functional for you. When you’re done, you’ll enjoy the calming effect of a neat, tidy space!

3. Any Projects You Have Been Putting Off

We all have projects that we’ve been meaning to start or finish. No matter what it is, finally crossing it off your to-do list will probably feel like a weight has been lifted. Completing projects that have been on your mind for a while will also give you some peace of mind and increase your sense of pride in your home.
